Andaz (1949) Review

Have watched it earlier 5 or 6 years ago and was amazed of its splendour and wide canvass, have not seen a Hindi black and white movie shot so beautifully and the scene where horse gallops over the cliff to drop down into the deep valley is awesome.

Murad who plays Nargis's father does a tremendous job here, his and Nargis's scene are so real,so touching.Seem like happening in front of your eyes.Murad's dialogues especially the one "Beti jab hum na honge to hamari baatein yaad aayengi" are well written, his heavy voice, towering personality but gentle demeanour  towards his daughter endear him to our hearts. His sudden death comes as an absolute shock to the viewer.

Story is by Shams Lucknowi,a renowned writer and music is by Naushad both from our own city Lucknow.Mehboob Khan's direction is deft and his storytelling finest, the same story could have been less convincing in climax. But he saw to it to bring the movie to a well thought out logical conclusion.

Nargis excels in this movie in every scene, she is the soul of this movie.Several scenes are shot in close-ups and she is just wonderful there.

Dileep Kumar is wonderful here too as a friend who is under the impression that she loves him.Later on he comes to know she is already in love.

Raj Kapoor is here in his early film role when he had yet to develop his screen persona. This is more of a negative character quite villainous.A person who uselessly mistrust his faithful wife.A Person who grievously injures her friend on the head and he goes crazy. In his craziness he attacks his wife who shoots him and is send to Jail. When he comes to know of his mistake there is nothing left but to cry over his misdeeds and evil ways.
