Elephant Walk (1954)

Many movies give you insight into a particular trade like "Parrish" in Tobacco Cultivation and "How Green Was My Valley" in Coal Mining. This movie gives you insight into Tea Cultivation.Peter Finch goes to London and falls in love with Elizabeth. He marries her and bring her to his Palatial Home in Sri Lanka surrounded by Vast Tea Cultivated fields. The Palatial House is build right in the middle of Elephant walk a path by which Elephants used to go to the river.Elephants are really upset by this and always try to go through.

If you have seen "Rebecca" you know "Gaslight" was much like it,"Elephant Walk" too is much like it.Here the Housekeeper is as weird and mysterious but is a Local Sri Lankan Native Appuhamy.Haunting memories of first wife in "Rebbeca" are replaced by dead father's memories of Elizabeth Taylor's Husband.Appuhamy holding conversation with his dead master on his Grave or his Room which stay close and is a mystery for new Bride, telling him of everything that goes on in the household.

Peter Finch becomes too engrossed in entertaining his Father's sycophants and workers and his work too.He has no time with her and gets furious of her meddling in Kitchen or in Appuhamy's work. Elizabeth is distraught as no Women folks are there except the native girls.she grows friendly with Dana Andrews and decides to leave Farm.Just then a Cholera outbreak stops her.She decides to stop and help her Husband in treating the Natives also their area is cordoned off to stop spread of disease.Soon no one is left to guard the house or ward off the Elephants. They soon come in great groups rushing in,Appuhamy is killed while trying to stop them. They destroy the whole house. In this moment of adversity Peter and Elizabeth come together and realize how much they love each other.Peter lets Elephants have their "Walk" and decides to build his house elsewhere.
