St. Thomas School of my time would remind you of those wonderful boarding schools located in those mesmerizing hills.
It was quite outside the city. The road leading to it was flanked by a thick canopy of evergreen trees. From far off they give impression as if the road would end in them.Because of those green trees it would be cool and shady even in summer when we got our Report Cards.
School was a little far from the road.A curved path lead to it.Our School was surrounded by vast open grass covered fields.Adjacent to school was a little farm house on right and Hindi teacher's house on left.Their was another school a little far off and airport a great distance away.Airplanes could be heard often. Also gliders and helicopters used to fly overhead.Between our school and airport lay vast fields with only a grove of Eucalyptus trees nearer to the airport runway, growing in a straight line.
A part of the field was like shallow saucer. We used to play football their.Tiny yellow flowers used to grow in the field with strange oily scent in them.Voice used to echo around their.During our games period we used to go out and play. Some boys and girls formed small groups and wandered further off
on desolate fields. The fields were grasslands covered only by grass and some small herbs,so even if they went far off ,they were always visible.
The Church in School was adorned by great lovely paintings.Once Father brought some football game on reel, some European League match, and a projector too.Set up a screen in Church and showed us a wonderful football game.
Their was a small canteen near the road from which children bought cakes,cream-rolls & toffees.A particular ice-cream vendor came around too when the School got over.
Their were two great Gulmohur trees in School. When they blossomed they looked really lovely with their bright red flowers. But soon the fall season came and green leaves disappear, soon flowers would go too.But then again in spring new buds would come and trees turn green.
Assembly time or prayer time in the morning was mostly good.We recited school prayer, sang some songs or hymns.Sister Kripa our English teacher taught us many good songs like "we shall overcome" ,"their shall be showers of blessings" etc.It was quite a joy to learn those songs and sing them too.
All seasons were in their full flow around our School. In summer hot winds use to blew across the field carrying dust with them.It seemed like spirits wandering across the fields. When rain came little ponds came into being.Soon Lotus and water-lilies bloom in them.On a windy rainy day rain made strange patterns.
